DUTIES:
DUTIES :
The clinical neuropsychologist is a member of the Psychology Service with a primary mission to provide services throughout the facility to inpatients and outpatients. The neuropsychologist evaluates patients for and treats patients with cognitive and neurological disorders. Services may include direct patient care, participation with treatment teams, consultation to other staff, clinical supervision of neuropsychology technicians and students, and participation in education and research.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Provide screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with a variety of cognitive, neurological, and psychiatric disorders.
  • Provide comprehensive neuropsychological assessments to patients with traumatic brain injury and other neurological disorders.
  • Provide cognitive rehabilitation and other specialized cognitive and neuropsychological treatments to patients with traumatic brain injury and other neurological disorders.
  • Provide counseling and psychotherapy to patients with traumatic brain injury and other neurological disorders.
  • Provide services to the families of veterans with traumatic brain injury and other neurological disorders, when such care is directly related to the overall treatment plan for the veteran and will allow better care for the veteran and allow the family to sustain the veteran in the home environment.
  • Perform capacity/competency assessments when there are questions about a patientÂ's ability to make medical decisions, perform other specific functions, or live independently.
  • Assess patientsÂ' understanding of advanced directives and other forms of consent and assisting staff in determining how to present treatment options and other such material to patients in a format they can understand.
  • Provide individual and group interventions to support patients that are coping with feelings of grief and loss associated with disability and other life transitions.
  • Provide educational and aptitude evaluations for patients with brain injuries and other cognitive disorders.
  • Provide effective interventions with couples or families, when appropriate, to relieve relationship difficulties, provide support to caregivers of veterans with brain injury or other cognitive disorders, and/or promote collaboration with the treatment teams for the benefit of the veteran.
  • Facilitate transition and adjustment to new living situations (e.g., nursing home, assisted living facility), and provide seamless intervention services, as appropriate.
  • Provide behavioral medicine interventions to manage pain, disability, address sleep problems, facilitate weight loss, promote smoking cessation, and enhance medical compliance.
  • Promote communication/interactions between medical team members, patients, and their families to facilitate the medical treatment process.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Doctoral degree in psychology from APA Accredited Graduate Program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology Successful completion of a professional psychology internship training program accredited by APA. Exceptions: (1) new VHA psychology intership programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation, provided such programs are sanctioned by the Veterans Health Administration Central Office Program Director for Psychology and Office of Academic Affiliations at the time the individual was an intern; and (2) Veterans Health Administration facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979). Hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia. Proficiency in spoken and written English Applicants must meet physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement may be required. This is a drug-testing designated position. Employees in drug-testing designated positions will be subject to random drug testing.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-13 LEVEL: Requires a minimum of two years post-doctoral experience as a psychologist, one year of which must have been equivalent to the GS-12 federal grade level. Creditable experience can be obtained through employment as a psychologist or through participating in a supervised post-doctoral training program. In addition the candidates must demonstrate the following: (1) Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations; (2) Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health; (3) Knowledge of clinical research literature; entified with the medical profession.)
