- Must possess, as a minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree from a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education.
- Must be currently licensed or eligible for licensing in the state where facility is located.
- Must have, as a minimum, two years hospital and/or clinical experience and at least one year of management experience.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
- Must be knowledgeable of pharmaceutical regulations and nursing practices and procedures, as well as, laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to living center facilities.
- Must be thoroughly familiar with laws, regulations, and guidelines governing the dispensing of medications; accuracy is imperative.
- Must be knowledgeable of computer systems, system applications, and other equipment relative to pharmaceutical services.
- Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
- Must be trustworthy, holding residents medical and personal information in confidence at all times.
- Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
- Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
- Essential Functions:*
- Develop and maintain written policies and procedures that govern the operation of the facility’s pharmaceutical services.
- Interpret the facility’s pharmaceutical policies and procedures to employees, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, etc., as necessary.
- Assumes responsibility for insuring adherence to policies and procedures related to the administration, storage, labeling, and distribution of medication.
- Maintain liaison with families and residents as necessary.
- Ensure that public information describing pharmaceutical services is accurate and fully descriptive.
- Make routine inspections of the facility’s pharmaceutical services to ensure that established policies are being implemented and followed.
- Ensure that physician’s orders are checked to ensure that residents are receiving medications as ordered by the attending physician.
- Supervise the records of receipt and distribution of all controlled substances and the maintenance of such records in sufficient detail to allow for an accurate reconciliation.
- Participate in discharge planning, the development and implementation of resident care plans, assessments, drug reviews, etc. as necessary.
- Assist in destroying medications in accordance with current regulations.
- Ensure that labeling of drugs and biologicals are in compliance with existing regulations, as well as established policies and procedures.
- Coordinate pharmaceutical services with other departments as necessary.
- Ensure that a level of stock medications, supplies, equipment, etc. is maintained at adequate levels to meet the needs of residents.
- Develop and maintain a current drug profile for each resident.
- Assist in developing the facilities emergency drug kit.
- Review pharmaceutical services complaints and grievances and make written reports of action taken.
- Ensure all residents receive pharmaceutical services in a manner and in an environment that maintains or enhances their quality of life without abridging the safety and rights of other residents.
