The Central Alabama Veteran Health Care System (CAVHCS) is a consolidated Health Care system that includes VA Medical Centers in Montgomery and Tuskegee Alabama as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Dothan Alabama, Ft. Rucker Alabama and Columbus Georgia. The Primary Duty Station for this position is Montgomery Al. The incumbent may be required to work on site at the other locations as required.

NOTE:
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and step of the applicant selected.

DUTIES:
The Chief, Sterile Processing and
Distribution (SPD) is a registered nurse who executes position responsibilities
that demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management
of SPD programs that directly affect patient care. The Chief, SPD demonstrates
performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group
of patients. The Chief, is responsible for the documented outcomes of the
Sterile Processing and Distribution section at the program or service level.
Program or service level outcomes must be broad and complex and can be
demonstrated at any organizationa! l level within a facility, VISN, or VACO. As
Chief, the incumbent is designated as the primary point of contact to work with
all services from which patient care medical/surgical supply inventory,
instruments, and equipment are received, processed packaged, and distributed.
Incumbent is responsible for the planning, direction and management of all SPD
programs to include full understanding of inventory management systems serving
as the technical expert and focal point for all those programs as part of Total
Supply Support for the Central Alabama Veterans Health care System (CAVHCS).
The duties of this position are highly specialized and require an in-depth
knowledge of overall SPD/total supply support programs. Incumbent is required
to have an in-depth knowledge of Equipment, IFCAP and GIP management programs
in addition to SPD management requirements. Incumbent oversees management of
the central point within the Medical Cente! r from which medical/surgical
supplies, instruments, case carts, an! d designated equipment are received,
processed, and packaged for distribution to surgical/patient care areas.
Processing includes the collection and receipt of soiled and contaminated items
from all areas within the Medical Center. Items are decontaminated by utilizing
appropriate cleaning, disinfecting, or sterilization methods as dictated by the
items being processed. Sterile preparation is accomplished by the assembly,
packaging, and terminal sterilization of items for use throughout the facility.
Instrument sets or trays contain from 20 to over 150 different types of
difficult surgical instrumentations

He/she
will work collaboratively with and effectively communicate to the Nurse Manager
and/or Service Chiefs any situation requiring implementation of Service action
plans for patient and program needs.

He/she will collect and analyze data related to patient population,
report findings and make r! ecommendations for improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

·

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

·

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a! related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's deg! ree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The criteria are as follows:
