Our Mission

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Museum operates two sites, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works). The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.

The Opportunity


The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a qualified Associate Conservator to join the Department of Paintings Conservation located at the Getty Villa. Working primarily in the frame studio within the Paintings Conservation Department and reporting to the Senior Conservator of Paintings, the ideal candidate will be well-versed in tasks concerning general collection care with a focus on preventive conservation, preparation of loans, including framing, glazing, and the fabrication of micro-climate envelopes.

Major Job Responsibilities:
  • Analyzes and advises on environmental factors, appropriate storage, transport and exhibition conditions.
  • Advises on, and manages/performs loan preparation, including all related tasks such as framing and glazing.
  • Designs and fabricates (in-frame) micro-climate envelopes and unique and complex mounts for the museum’s paintings and frame collection by applying expert knowledge of current best practices.
  • Prepares paintings for technical examination, loans, and for display in both permanent and exhibition galleries.
  • Performs tasks related to general collection care, including the care and maintenance of works in storage and on display, as well as tasks related to IPM (Integrated Pest Management).
  • In liaison with the Paintings Department, advises on all structural and aesthetic framing issues.
  • Carries out research into materials and technologies to use in the treatment of painted and gilded objects.
Qualifications:
  • MA in conservation or equivalent degree
  • 5-7 years experience in conservation
Requirement: All employees must be fully-vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus as a condition of employment. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in conservation from a recognized training program preferred, with an emphasis on preventive conservation and familiarity with painted and gilded surfaces (frames and paintings).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the relationship between painting and frame to ensure paintings are safely supported.
  • Expert hand skills, basic competency with machine shop tools.
  • Knowledge of chemical and physical properties of art materials, conservation and deterioration processes.
  • Familiarity with scientific instrumentation and ability to operate analytical and technical imaging equipment (digital X-ray, XRF, IR, multi and hyper spectral imaging).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are a must; able to convey information clearly and concisely both in written and spoken form.
  • Competence with collections management and digital asset management tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and foster teams across disciplines and to build long-term relationships.
  • Knowledge of current preventive conservation practices.
  • Accomplished in art-historical, scientific and conservation research, writing and publication.
