The Central Alabama Veteran Health Care System (CAVHCS) is a consolidated health care system that includes VA Medical Centers in Montgomery and Tuskegee Alabama as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Dothan Alabama, Ft. Rucker Alabama and Columbus Georgia. The Primary Duty Station for this position is at the Tuskegee Campus. The incumbent may be required to work on site at the other locations as required.

Current permanent employees of CAVHCS, including Veteran Canteen Service (VCS) permanent employees who have completed 90 days of continuous service in the VCS, and all permanent VISN 7 employees physically located at CAVHCS.

NURTITIOINAL CARE: The incumbent conducts a comprehensive nutrition assessment for patient at nutritional risks. He/she develops and implements an individualized plan for medical nutrition therapy in accordance with the patientÂ's medical program goals and objectives. The incumbent accurately obtains and interprets medical information pertinent to the patientÂ's nutritional care to determine risk, assess nutritional status and develop individual specialized care plans to simultaneously address several disease processes. The incumbent calculates nutritional requirements (calories, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, electrolytes, fluid) and necessary diet restrictions or food/drug interactions. The incumbent utilizes assessments and evaluation techniques that consider age-specific needs as well as cultural, religious, and ethnic concerns. He/she orders labs, diets and consults per Scope of Practice/Clinical privileges. The incumbent evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcome of medical nutrition therapy interventions. Evaluates the patientÂ's response to care based on identified, measurable outcomes and reviews the plan as appropriate. The incumbent documents nutrition care plan in the patientÂ's medical record; including nutrition assessment data, medical nutrition therapy initiated and recommendations, results of nutrition counseling and discharge planning. The incumbent works cooperatively with food service staff to assure conformance to diet prescriptions. The incumbent uses established business rules for Enrollment and Registration, Scheduling, Consult management, use of the VA Electronic Wait List (EWL), handling no-shows, patent cancellations and clinical cancellations as applicable to the job.

NUTRITION EDUCATION: The incumbent assesses educational needs and provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups, incorporating a learning approach that considers the cultural, religious, educational, and medical situation of the patient. The incumbent evaluates achievement of learning objectives by the patient and/or family. He/she adapts nutrition education materials and counseling techniques to clientÂ's level of understanding, for which frequently involves simplifying complex dietary restrictions. The incumbent provides appropriate follow-up in accordance with patientÂ's treatment goals, referring patients for outpatient counseling, community or home health service as appropriate. The incumbent assists in the education of dietetic students and interns. He/she plans learning experiences, teaches, and evaluates performance. The incumbent in community projects and education as needed or assigned. The incumbent conducts self, in a manner that demonstrates adherence to standards of professional performance. The incumbent performs others duties as assigned to meet the needs of the Service and clients to include providing support/coverage for vacancies and leave. The incumbent assists in patient discharge planning to ensure provision of appropriate services and equipment for eternal feeding. He/she assists in the review and revision of the Diet Manual, as applicable. The incumbent is a member of the Nutrition Support Team. The incumbent is a member of the VAMC inspection team for community nursing homes as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS

a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

b. Education. The individual must have earned a minimum of a bachelorÂ's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, and fulfilled each of the following criteria:

(1) Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE).

(2) Completed a CADE accredited supervised practice program.

(3) Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing branch of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

c. Registration

(1) All applicants must be registered with the CDR.

(2) Non-registered applicants who otherwise meet the minimum requirements in the basic qualification standard may be appointed as a graduate dietitian under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D) . Failure to obtain CDR registration during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-11

Experience: At least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level.

Or,

EDUCATION: education equivalent to 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited university or college in the field of dietetics or closely related field.

Or,

Combination of graduate education and experience.

In addition , the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1 . Knowledge of basic investigative processes and techniques in order to participate in the design of studies, collect data, interpret findings, and translate results into written and oral communication.

2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical dietetics and medical nutrition therapy for patients with complex medical conditions in order to plan, develop, and coordinate medical nutrition therapy intervention, interdisciplinary care plans, and nutrition education activities.

3. Knowledge of complex areas of clinical nutrition including management of critically ill and malnourished patients, and ability to apply medical nutrition therapy to patients with multiple co-morbidities.

4. Ability to act as a mentor/consultant for health care providers including registered dietitians, dietetic interns, nurses, physicians, medical students, and allied health professionals.
