DUTIES:
FULL-TIME, ROTATING SHIFTS

This Pharmacy Technician will function throughout the Birmingham VA Medical Center located in downtown Bir! mingham, Alabama. The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for performing! a variety of

pharmaceutical tasks and will be monitored by a licensed pharmacist.

This Pharmacy Technician is also a highly specialized, efficient, motivated and customer friendly technician.

Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for complex technical and automated functions that require extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and pharmacy practices.

This position requires a

Board Certified Pharmacy Technician. If you are NOT a Board Certified Pharmacy Technician, you will be rated as INELIGIBLE.

This Pharmacy Technician is expected to maintain a high degree of accurate and productivity and performance while being extremely sensitive to the contribution to total patient care.

The Pharmacy Technician is expected to accomplish all duties normally performed by both generalized and specialized technicians (GS-661-5) related to stocking, delivering, inventoring, packaging, intravenous sterile prod! ucts, hazardous drugs, controlled substances, telephone care and inspections.

This technician will serve outpatient, inpatient and State Veterans Nursing Home eligible veterans.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship

: Must be a United States Citizen.

Experience:
One year of specialized experience as a Pharmacy Technician and equivalent to at least the GS 5 grade level.

Certification:
Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is

required

at grades GS-6 and above.

Physical Requirements:
Must be medically cleared by the VHA Employee Health Unit (EHU) physician prior to entry on duty. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

English Language Proficiency:
Applicants appointed to d! irect patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written E! nglish in accordance with Chapter 2, Section D, paragraph 5a of VHA Handbook 5005.

GRADE DETERMINATION:
In addition to the Basic Requirements, at the GS-06 grade level the candidate must posses the following:

One (1) year of experience at the GS-5 grade level, and (2) must fully meet the KSA's at the GS-5 grade level. These KSA's include the following:

1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.

2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.

3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.

4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.

GS-6: In addition to the above KSA's

and must fully demonstrate the below technical KSA's.

1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations (e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action).

2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

3. ! Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
