DUTIES:
The staff nurse is a professional nurse who is
directly responsible to the nurse manager. The staff nurse is responsible for
assessing, planning, implementing, super! vising, and evaluating a program of
high quality nursing care for designated patients. The staff nurse has team
leader responsibilities, which include assisting the nurse manager to create an
environment that promotes personal growth and employee satisfaction. Evaluates
and determines, with the nurse manager, the kind and amount of nursing care
required to meet the nursing needs of patients. Assists the nurse manager in
coordinating patient care activities with other service lines and/or
departments to promote comprehensive health care for patients. Plans for
effective patient care by: triaging unscheduled walk-in patients and managing
the flow of unscheduled patients to available psychiatric providers in a safe
and efficient process; collecting data pertinent for assessing, planning, and
evaluating nursing actions to ensure quality patient care; making nursing
diagnoses, documenting, and implementing appropriate nursin! g care; initiating,
developing, revising, and utilizing a nursing c! are plan that is individualized
and current for each patient; documenting pertinent information in the
patient's clinical record according to disease entity and individualized
problems; making assignments according to the capabilities and preparation of
personnel relative to the degree of illness of patients; and planning daily
assignments to ensure that distribution of workload is commensurate with the
nursing needs of patients. Provides for the accurate administration of
treatments and medications as ordered by the physician and in accordance with
established policies and procedures. Assists in developing and revising
standardized methods and procedures that facilitate quality patient care.
Assists in evaluating nursing needs of patients admitted to the health care
system to determine needs for patient/family teaching and/or need for community
nurse referral prior to discharge. Participates in interdisciplinary planning
! conferences, discharge planning conferences and patient/family teaching
programs and conferences. Serves as a role model for peers and supportive care
employees in the provision of direct patient care and conduct. Provides
emergency treatment in cases of cardiac arrest and respiratory distress.
Participates in performance improvement. The employee provides patient care,
which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation
needs of the patient. Collaborates with the nurse manager to determine the
number of professional and non-professional personnel required for quality
care. Communicates concerns of nursing personnel to the nurse manager for
evaluation and disposition. Assumes responsibility for developing leadership
skills with the assistance of the head nurse and assumes
supervisory/administrative responsibilities of the nurse manager when assigned
to the charge nurse role. Assists the nurse manager! in evaluating non-professional
personnel performance. Assists in d! etermining and ordering the kind of level of
supplies and equipment needed to perform nursing care activities on the unit.
Assists in arranging for maintenance and repair of all unit equipment as
indicated. Makes regular rounds at frequent intervals to observe and evaluate
the quality of nursing care and service given to patients including the
patient's clinical records when team leader. Assists in providing for the
maintenance and confidentiality of all medical records on the unit including
current clinical records, as well as previous admission records. Assists the
head nurse in interpreting and applying policies relative to EEO and
labor/management agreements. Assists in coordinating the communication of the
daily activities and conditions of patients between all tours of duty. Reports
pertinent information relative to unit activities and condition of patients to
the nurse manager. Participates in the health care system's s! afety programs and
provides for the implementation of safety standards on the unit level.
Participates in identification and design/selection of studies of problem areas
within the nursing unit. Interprets and evaluates findings from studies for
problem solution on the nursing unit. Helps develop plan for improving
performance on the nursing unit. Assists in the analysis of nursing activities
on the nursing unit by reviewing: nursing needs of patients; functions and
skills of nursing personnel; and changing methods and techniques in nursing.
Participates in ward orientation of new personnel, planning, and conducting
staff conferences

Preferred Characteristics/Experience: In addition to the basic qualification requirements, applicants must have demonstrated evidence of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities determined to be essential for satisfactory performance in the position.

1.

At least ! two (2) years clinical experience as a Mental Health RN is required.
2.. Outpatient nursing experience preferred.

3. Excellent clinical skills along with the ability to work effectively with diverse multidisciplinary team members required.

4. Ability to work with patients exhibiting a variety of mental/behavioral problems.

5. Ability to collect and record a variety of patient data in a computer based electronic medical record system.

6. Ability to perform direct nursing care in compliance with organizational standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

7. Skilled in patient and family education for patient medications and disease processes.

8. Skilled telephone skills for talking with patients and families and coordinating care with other departments and facilities.

9. Current license & BLS certification.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualifi! ed citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency

and

accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to s! it for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Ref! erence VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Nurse I Level I

  • An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
·

Nurse I Level II

  • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
·

Nurse I Level III

  • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experienc! e, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

Nurse II

  • A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
