The Birmingham Veterans Affair! s Medical Center (BVAMC) is an integral part of the Medical community that provides acute, tertiary, medical, and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama. The Medical Center provides care to a veteran population of 420,000 in Alabama and treats approximately 57,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 138 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Birmingham, AL is located in the heart of the Southeastern United States and is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering, and higher education. NOTE: Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and step of the applicant selected.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Must pass pre-employment examination.

Duty hours: 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.

The incumbent will be responsible and accountable for coordinating patient care for individual and groups of patients ranging from the young adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 or older. The incumbent demonstrates good clinical practice skills, problem-solving skills, and decision making skills. Provision of nursing care, administration of medications/ treatments, clinical documentation, physician support, and participation in the day to day operations of the clinic. The incumbent will require the Nurse to provide critical assessments ! and triage patients. The RN will provide critical clinical support alon! g with all other nursing and technical duties required in the clinic. This staff nurse position is clinically and administratively responsible to Primary Care Nurse Management. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).

Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbi! a. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Licensure : Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Physical Standards: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 ( http://vaww1.va.gov/ohrm/HRLibrary/Dir-Policy.htm ). Functional requirements include light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours, use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read ty! pe written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispere! d voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization,

Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Education/Experience Requirements:
Nurse I, level I-Associate Degree or diploma in nursing;! no experience

Nurse I, level 2-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 1 year experience OR Associate Degree in Nursing and a Bachelors in a related field, no experience, OR BSN, no experience.

Nurse I, Level 3-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 2-3 years experience OR Associates Degree or Diploma in Nursing and Bachelors degree in a related field, approx. 1-2 years experience OR BSN, approx. 1-2 years experience OR MSN or related field with a BSN or BachelorÂ's degree in related field, no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Nurse III - M! aster's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2! -3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

Enhanced Qualifications:
Two (2) years of successful general medical-surgical practice experience preferred.

Two (2) years of Ambulatory Care/Disease Management experience preferred.

BSN or higher nursing degree preferred.

Current BCLS certification.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).

Demonstrated ability to assess and prioritize multiple medical and surgical diagnoses.

Demonstrated excellent physical assessment skills.

Demonstrated ability to be dependable, self-directed, and flexible, including flexibility in assignment and time scheduling.

Demonstrated leadership skills.
